Health and Safety Impacts of Transporting and Shipping Coal

A letter from the Humboldt-Del Norte County Medical Society addressed to Eureka City Council, Humboldt County Supervisors, and Humboldt Bay Harbor District about the health and safety impacts of transporting coal. Click here to read their full letter.

As you know from our experience with wildfire smoke, fine particulates travel hundreds of miles so increased emissions would impact everyone in the Humboldt Bay region and the Eel River valley, not just those living near the rail line or the port. Coal dust also contains heavy metals including mercury, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead and nickel, which have been associated with increased risk of cancer, birth defects, endocrine disruption, and neurological damage.
